Is George Clooney the Only Person that Cares About the Poor Refugees of Darfur?
About two weeks ago I watched the documentary “Living with Refugees (Surviving Sudan)”… and was “shocked”!
In this documentary on the Discover Investigative television channel, award-winning journalist Sorious Samura travels to Chad to live with a family in a refugee camp for one month.
He lives under the same conditions as the refugees, eating what they eat, drinking what they drink, building a close relationships with the refugees sharing their hopes and fears. This film provides a unique insight into what life is really like for a refugee.
Now I knew that the refugees have endured horrible atrocities and walked hundreds of miles with little food and water to reach the refugee camps. What I was shocked to learn is that once the refugees reach the refugee camps, their ordeal continues. They must “register” with the camp officials… who appear to be uncaring, incompetent, corrupt, or some combination thereof.
Newly registered refugees must live at the camps with no tents, no food, and no water provided for weeks and often months… begging food and water from their fellow refugees that are finally receiving their rations. An “official” who oversees many camps provides only excuses and pleads ignorance of the situation. He finally is able to confirm that the new refugees are “on the list” to receive rations at some future date.
Sad… sad… sad! What can we do to help these poor people who have survived murder and rape of their family members by the “Janjaweed” fighters backed by the Sudanese government.
I know that George Clooney has been bringing the plight of the refugees to the media, but I hear nothing about anybody else doing anything to help these poor people! Then, I see the documentary and wonder more… is George Clooney the only person willing to help these people? What is our government doing to help the situation?
Something must be done to help people in need around the world. We did not protect the Rwandans in the 1990′s… we are not adequately protecting the refugees in Sudan. Do we as a world society really care anymore about our brothers and sisters around the world? I would like to say “yes” but the jury is still out. Lets return a favorable outcome for these people.
